  • Introduction With the support from the SVD and SSpS missionary orders, Sr. Urbania Tushaus established the Department of Home Economics and Nutrition, the first of its kind in the country, under the former College of Science when the University was re-founded in Taiwan in 1963. In 1994, the College of Human Ecology was officially approved by the Ministry of Education with the departments of Life Science, Food and Nutrition Sciences, and Textiles and Clothing. Currently, the College has five departments and two independent graduate programs, providing undergraduate, master and doctoral programs. It has some 2,400 students and 106 faculty and staff members. Faculty At present, roughly 90 percent of the College faculty hold doctoral degrees. To integrate classroom learning with work-related learning, the College also invites experts from the industrial sector to teach professional courses. Furthermore, the College promotes scholarly exchange programs for faculty and students with universities worldwide in order to foster intercultural understanding and an understanding of global issues. Curriculum The foundation of the College is a commitment to meeting the needs of people and society. The College works closely with academics and industries. The curriculum is designed to provide a balance between theory and practice. In addition to the training necessary for professional practice, the College also provides students with a firm understanding of cultural, social, natural, and technical principles related to the welfare of human beings. Facilities For the Department of Food Science, a Pilot Plant and a Food Technology Research Center (including a test room), an intern store, and a precision appliance lab For the Department of Nutrition Science, a Laboratory Animal Center, a Precision Appliance Lab, and an Anatomy Lab For the Department of Textiles and Clothing, Textiles Experiment Lab, a Knit/Weave/Dye Lab, and a Photography Studio For the Department of Child and Family Studies, a Child Care Center and a laboratory For the Department of Restaurant, Hotel and Institutional Management a practice Restaurant, a Café and an on-campus hostel for students to gain practical, hands-on experience in food preparation and table service Wireless network in College buildings for teaching and research Specialized equipment for teaching and research, including biochemical and chemical instruments for spectroscopy, chromatography, radioisotope analysis, electrophoresis, microscopy, and ultracentrifugation; physical testing equipment; and cameras, videotape, and sound recording equipment Academic Activities The faculty members of the College are vigorously engaged in both teaching and research activities. The grants awarded to the College from the government and private organizations and Industry-University Cooperative Projects amount to some 50 million NT dollars each year. Faculty members are constantly invited to present their research findings in international conferences and regularly publish their papers in scholarly journals. For graduate students of the College, graduate seminars and graduation exhibitions are organized annually to encourage students' pursuit of academic excellence. Furthermore, each department organizes academic conferences and symposia to foster dialogues between researchers, practitioners, and those who develop and implement national policy. Educational Goals and Vision The educational goals of the College include enhancing the quality of teaching and research in food, clothing, child care, and recreation with an emphasis on holistic education, to contribute to the well-being of individuals, families, and communities, to elevate the quality of everyday life, and to foster professionals, academic researchers, management specialists, and teachers in the related areas of human ecology.
